Destinations

A collection of places I’ve been and trips I’ve planned, with simple notes on what I did, what I liked, and what I’d do again.

Drawn in by Vietnam’s history and food culture, I arrived in Hanoi to explore its old streets, street food and coffee scene before heading out to Hạ Long Bay to cruise through its iconic limestone cliffs and calm emerald waters. By the end I realised Vietnam wasn’t just another stop on my travels—it might be one of my favourite places on earth.

Inspired by Apocalypse Now, I flew to Cambodia in April 2023, chasing an Angkor Wat sunrise in Siem Reap before heading to Phnom Penh for markets, Mekong sunsets, and a sobering look at the country’s recent history.

A Chiang Mai trip that mixed sightseeing with match days: temples, markets, Muay Thai, and a borderline irresponsible amount of khao soi, followed by playing in the Gymkhana Club Cricket Sixes tournament with Hong Kong Scottish, a tour that was less about results and more about the experience.

A Saturday-night hike up Hong Kong’s Lion Rock Peak, chosen because it’s short, steep, and doable, with a simple route from Wong Tai Sin to the trailhead near Temple Hill Fat Jong Temple, then a stair-heavy climb to a crazy city-light view across Kowloon and out toward Central before heading down via Lion Rock Park.

I have always been interested in all things paranormal so when I heard that there was a creepy, abandoned and “haunted” school nearby I jumped at the opportunity to pay it a visit

It was during a fairly routine day of being a tourist in Quarry Bay that my sister and I came across the signposts for Mount Parker. Specifically, the Mount Parker Road Green Trail just off King’s Road. I had not been on a hike in Hong Kong yet and since I now knew exactly how to access this one, I looked at my sister and suggested we do it. Thankfully she agreed.

After years of dreaming and small steps, I finally made the big move from South Africa to Hong Kong in late 2020, driven by a long-standing desire to travel and teach abroad, earning my degree and TEFL qualification along the way before landing in a city that’s already turned my world upside down.
